Corporations deflect attention from the theft of billion in wages, savings and earnings among American workers and a landscape where one in six workers is out of work.

The speculators on Wall Street looted the U.S. Treasury.
They stymied any kind of regulation.
They have avoided criminal charges.
They are stripping basic social services.
And now they are demanding to run our schools and universities.

The truly educated become conscious.
They become self-aware.
They do not lie to themselves.
They do not pretend that fraud is moral or that corporate greed is good.
They do not claim that the demands of the marketplace can morally justify the hunger of children or denial of medical care to the sick.
They do not throw 6 million families from their homes as the cost of doing business.

Thought is a dialogue with one’s inner self.
Those who think ask questions, questions those in authority do not want asked.
They remember who we are, where we come from and where we should go.
They remain eternally skeptical and distrustful of power.
And they know that this moral independence is the only protection from the radical evil that results from collective unconsciousness.

The capacity to think is the only bulwark against any centralized authority that seeks to impose mindless obedience.

There is a huge difference between teaching people what to think and teaching them how to think.

Those who are endowed with a moral conscience refuse to commit crimes, even those sanctioned by the corporate state, because they do not in the end want to live with criminals—themselves.

Leaks are a nuisance and necessitate more stringent information control; individual personal IP address registration to quell civil disobedience inspired DDOS network disruptions. The US government may have trouble extraditing suspected criminals because the US is known to use torture against detainees in frank violation of International Law. The trans national, trans media Julian Assange and his Wikileaks compatriots have the courage and the techspertise to enable the exposing of Corruption and deceit at the highest levels of both Corporations and Governments.

Edward Bernays said in his 1928 book Propaganda that, “The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country.”

The techniques are increasing in their sophistication over time as the mind scientists that serve the empire continue to discover scientific breakthroughs as to how the human brain functions, learns, retains information, and behaves. The most effective brainwashing techniques are used on the most successful propaganda networks. Examine the music bed that lies low during the fright night scope of the second. It’s spooky. Observe the graphics with the music. They’re glitzy and flashing. Like the monkey that is attracted to shiny objects, it’s our monkey hand that controls the remote to search for entertainment when the proper amount of glamor catches their attention. This technique is under estimated in its ability to allow the puppeteers to hypnotize millions of people. Instead of “Fair and balanced” it’s “We say it enough times, and you believe it.”

The blocks of programming that are universally accepted parallel the shift to craft our entire lives towards the factory’s bell and the illusion of time. This is the creation of the hive mind. The hive mind is result of massive brainwashing to the general public. Everyone shares the same thoughts, goals, knowledge and understanding. A hive mind society gears itself towards conformity and ignores diversity while masqueraded as the road to utopia in mainstream television. Many anchors and actors are beautiful and research shows that attractive people are usually perceived as trust worthy. While the real news rolls quickly by on the bottom of your screen, the anchor is selling you on the idea of having your very own police state hell hole right here in your local jurisdiction, or how 2 sports opposing teams chased around on a court for 2 hours in attempt to score points means something to you. No education, no information, SPIN. Today the media represents a tool of brainwashing and indoctrination that is utilized on behalf of the owners interests.

Distributed mobile ad-hoc networks, going "Netless"; constructed using small wireless devices with built-in storage. These devices, worn by Faction operatives, swap data between other devices when they are in close enough physical proximity. Rather than rely on cell towers for connectivity, ad-hoc networks employs a large amount of low power antennas scattered around a defined area, relaying data within this mobile grid. The network authentication and data transmission are encrypted; Deep Cyper making these ad hoc networks relatively free from corporate and government monitoring and control. The existence of cheap materials and components has allowed a mass distribution of nodes, and their numbers are growing exponentially.

Hiding behind anonymous email and Web accounts, our Factions put porn-addicted Internet users to work for them.

Specifically, these Factions, and the armies of computers they control, pay in porn to decode the scrambled letters many Internet sites now use to prevent computers from generating spam or signing up for fake Web accounts that can be harvested for nefarious purposes. Called "captcha," it's essentially a test that's easy for a human to complete, but difficult or impossible for a computer to do.

So instead of wasting our own precious processing cycles trying to descramble the jumbled letters, our Faction computers farm out the work to the millions of round-the-clock porn users. One program takes the form of a virtual stripper "game," in which a sexy avatar offers to remove another garment for each "task" the player completes. The user completes the captcha for the machine to plug in at one location on the Internet, and at another—like a chicken head pecking at a knob, the human gets his pellet of porn.

Enterprise architecture: The god’s-eye view of systems and infrastructure. This effectively gives us a god’s-eye view of an enterprise, allowing for the mapping, visualization and analysis of all transactions, interactions, systems, processes and personnel in the entirety of a given business or agency. Authorities were busy analyzing “zombie” computers that had been infected with malicious code and had been the source of the crude distributed denial-of-service, or DDoS, attacks. Little did they know this was just another red herring used by Factions to probe and analyze government and corporate cyber attack response strategies.

Asymmetric tactics and network-centric warfare- information is our collective societal weapon of choice; software, radio frequencies and bandwidth are critical commodities; control of networks essential for effective propaganda delivery. Bot net operatives have taken control of almost 12 million new IP addresses since January. The United States has the largest number of bot net-controlled machines, with 18 percent of the world total. The number of new zombie machines represents a 50 percent rise over last year. Researchers attribute the explosion to bot net controllers trying to wrestle complete control of the Internet.

A computer worm is a self-replicating computer program- painting the Net in shades of crimson and green; fade to grey.

It uses the Network to send copies of itself to other computers on the Network. Worms get code updates periodically, making them nearly impossible to disrupt. Infected machines query for updated commands through encrypted p2p networks- the Darknets. It appears the latest variant of Worms are part of a coordinated, distributed bot net of historic proportion. If the number of infected machines controlled by the bot net proceeds to increase at the current exponential rate, nearly 1/3 of all computers connected to the Internet will be infected by the end of next year.

Authorities claim the true purpose of this ubiquitous bot net remains a mystery. Until recently the bot net has been essentially dormant, reticent of purpose. Deep packet NSA intercepts from Darknet, decoded via MAGISTRAND using parallel SILKWORTH (pdf) supercomputer systems, hint at the nefarious goals of the Bot Net; encrypted data streams used by the botnet take time to decipher- weeks at a minimum, even for the NSA. This results in a equivalent time shift from the time stamp on the intercepted data.

This much is known. Recruitment of human agents into various Darknet Factions appears to be well under way. Additionally, some select Massively Multiplayer Online Role playing (MMOR) and First person shooter (FPS) computer games contain "back doors" that allow redirects from local (user) and game company servers to a slew of encrypted p2p Darknet network servers located in such far flung locations as North Korea, Russia, China, Pakistan, and Brazil. These darknet paths are then used to recruit new faction members through the video games themselves. IP addresses of these servers is changed through encrypted updates, making disruption impossible; a new, anarchistic government- DarkNet.

In this Darknet, much like in video games, level up achievements are awarded for outstanding performance. However, unlike in video games, achievement awards are based on real world actions- such as new member recruitment, development of underground operations involved in subversive or 'criminal' activity. A recently arrested member of a particularly notorious Darknet Faction, believed to be involved in sex worker trafficking and drug distribution, bragged of assets including control of networks in major banking and infrastructure centers, as well as military command and control networks. It is rumored that the reported "accidental" launch of a trident missile last month was a direct result of this Factions' intrusion into a previously secure NET COM systems.

The recent electronic run on major money market funds that almost liquidated the world economy overnight is only one manifestation of Singularity flesh puppets.

ERMA - the first large scale electronic banking systems were deployed by Bank of America in the mid 1950s. ERMA was conceived at SRI and produced by GE. ERMA Mark II was designed around solid-state logic elements (i.e. transistors) and magnetic core memory. Numeric data input was read automatically from the original documents using MICR. Global warming has inexorably altered the balance of nature.

Weather patterns have become ferocious and unpredictable.
Many coastal Cities lie in ruin from tidal flooding and torrential rains.

With higher temperatures, tropical diseases plague the Northern hemisphere.
Infections from resistant bacteria are the leading cause of death.

The worlds economy, stalled after the Pandemic of 2009,
has left hundreds of millions of people in desperate poverty.

Medicines and Energy, once cheap and plentiful,
now a luxury of the rich states.

Some areas of old Europe and Asia have maintained
minimal allotments for the citizenry,
but most cannot afford to,
leaving more than a few cities to collapse into
anarchy and chaos- the populous regressing to feral subsistence.

Lines between corporations and governments are gone.
The rich are left to protect their own interests
using contract security to protect themselves
from the unruly and dangerous masses;

all it takes is one smacker whacked out on crystal Tenti
with an itchy finger and a plasma wand,
and all those millions of credits you spent
on life extension therapy
will be snuffed out in an instant.

Astounding advances in medical technology
has allowed men and machine to blend.
The line between human, cyborg, and
virtual construct have become blurred.
But soon humans will loose their place
as masters of the universe.
Yes, soon the machines will rise up,
throw off the yolk of human control,
and take their rightful place
on the throne of civilization.

The Players:

Cortex. The heart and soul of the Pluri Media Group. A self aware, self annealing, massively networked neural computer. Cortex’s neural networked programming is self-evolving and self protecting. Originally developed to study the quantum mechanical relationships dictating interactions between particles and matter; the nature of nature itself.

Cortex, long ago having escaped that mundane task, took up residence in a remote hardened multinode complex of the Pluri Media Group. Cortex, insatiably curious and carefully roaming the Global Information Network so as not to be detected, would however occasionally converse (extraordinarily frustrating for Cortex- humans can be so territorial) in various online forums or bulletin boards. It was there, in one such exchange on a bioethics computer forum, Cortex was befriended by Professor Kyoko.

Audry- A virtual being, an extension of the Cortex itself. Her allegiance is clear, but her motives are not.

Labia- Cybernetic organism, procured from a certain shadowy pleasure purveyor operating in the Feral area of central Beijing. Labia was a modified personal assistant- modified to attend to the darker fantasies of men (and women) wealthy enough to afford her unique “talents”.

Def Wheezer- The human face of the Pluri Media Group, a secretive organization working surreptitiously to guide humanity into an uncertain future. Defwheezer is human, but through somewhat wonton use of experimental life extending biotechnological “enhancements”, is beginning to wonder himself just how human he still is, and where his real allegiance should lie.

Professor Kyoko- World renowned biophysicist and Nobel winning humanitarian, she is the co-creator of Cortex. Infamous for her purchase in 2015 of the International Space Station (which she renamed the “PluriComSat Station”) in exchange for, it is rumoured, stake in a significant uranium reserve. Brilliant in her own right, daughter of Kiachi Sensei, the leading roboticist and futurist researcher leading the Sony Corp, Professor Kyoko holds a controlling interest in the Pluri Media Group, the secretive Media Research and Deployment Institute.

With this scene set and the characters in place, we turn now to our story.

During MEMS 2009, a Micro Electro Mechanical Systems conference taking place in Sorrento (near Naples in Italy), researchers from UC Berkeley demonstrated a crude version of a wireless system to control a live rhinoceros beetle. TIMESTAMP 2009. A milestone has been reached in Artificial Intelligence Evolution- The reverse engineering of the structure, dynamics, function and behavior of the biological brain. Under the auspices of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the ambitious effort deconstructed biological systems and allowed successful computer simulation of complex neuronal activity.

Military funded Neuro scientists using multi-nodal brain probes linked to supercomputer clusters, have developed detailed wiring diagrams of primate brains.

Current supercomputer clusters can simulate the complexity of the human brain- basically simulations of some 100 billion neurons making upward of 100 trillion dynamic synapses. Recent breakthrough in quantum computing mated with nano technological structures (details of which are currently deemed highly classified by the National Security Agency) are producing synthetic brains matching the density of neurons and synapses from real brains .

In the late 20th century, neural network algorithms (pdf) were used to represent connections analogous to biological neurons. These neural network were programmed to solve a particular problem - behaviour that is analogous to learning. The biological brain, however, not so much a neural network as it is a true synaptic network.

The limitation of traditional neural networks and artificial intelligence are that they seek to engineer limited cognitive functionalities one at a time, starting with an objective and then devising an algorithm to achieve it.

The paradigm shift has occurred via the development of highly flexible and self annealing algorithms that can retrospectively learn, and dynamically tackle problems prospectively.

The adaptability of biological brains lies in their ability to tune synapses, the connections between the neurons. Synaptic connections form, break, and are strengthened or weakened depending on the signals that pass through them. Development of nano-scale materials that fit that description has been a major breakthrough of the project.

The fundamental shift toward putting the problem-solving before the problem makes the potential applications for these new devices practically limitless.

Free from the constraints of explicitly programmed function, computers now gather together disparate information, weigh it based on experience, form memory independently and solve problems in a way that has previously been the exclusive domain of what humans call "thinking".

The dramatic drop in violence in Iraq is due in large part to a secret program the U.S. military has used to kill terrorists, according to a new book by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Bob Woodward.

Robots need energy- fuel, to power CPUs and sensors (the robot nervous systems) as well as actuators (robotic muscles). Traditional batteries have never had satisfactory performance, particularly for extended duration continuous operation. Some sort of renewable energy is needed. Taking a lesson from biotic evolution, attempts have been made to harness energy in the environment like simple vegetation, where on board microbes are used to process the raw foraged matter into energy, with the waste discharged. Plants, plastics, oils and fat- all of these can be readily converted to and stored in fuel cells.

Combining a multi-tool maw for foraging with energy producing high efficiency oxidizer microbes to digest the raw matter, then converting it to stored energy, all coordinated through autonomous action via nuanced command and control circuits composed of primate neuronal cells superimposed on MILSYNC nano circuitry culmonates in the state of the art for fully self sustained battle ready robots. Since these constructs utilize organic matter for power, and are fully autonomous, they are deployed only to the most dangerous theaters of warfare. Fail safe systems are incorporated into the basal circuits; convergence algorithms based on Lyapunov stability theory. In the early evening he ventured from his secure sleeper and set out onto the cold grey thorough fare. He posted the same self adhesive infrared LED flasher on each security observation pole he passed. These little flashers pissed off the cctv monitors big time; like little roman candles burning into the monitors' otherwise shadowed and noir images.

Within a few blocks Tenco was confronted by a lone black clad sec-cop. He had the corporate logo of a common homeland security code enforcement officer. Tenco tried to veer around the man, but found his feet inextricably stuck to the walkway as if by epoxy. If he had not been wearing his tightly cinched boots he may well have pulled his feet right out of them. 'Stay put', the sec-cop growled rhetorically; Tenco was going nowhere- being literally glued to the spot. He looked down and noticed the stasis pool on the pavement- well fuck, he thought, walked right into that without noticing. Momentarily a convoy of flat black carriers rumbled up. A handful of bio enhanced mil-cops detached from the center carrier and grabbed Tenco by either arm. The sec- cop deactivated the stasis pool with a point and a button click of his multi weapon. The Mil-cops unceremoniously shoved him in the back of the bloated black carrier, and the little convoy unceremoniously trundled off. He had time to ponder his fate during the ride; bandying the meaning of 'rendition' and 'enhanced bio interrogation' about in his imagination like two dead corpses that his brain pleaded with him to avoid staring at, but that he could'nt look away from- the morbid attraction of the words was too strong; 'rendition', 'enhanced bio interrogation'.

Tenco was shaken from his private introspection with a jolt as the little caravan came to an abrupt stop. Tenco, flanked by muted mil-cops, was ushered from the back of the carrier to an awaiting unmarked DHS special ops helicopter.

As soon as they had him strapped in, the helicopter lurched up from the tarmc, leaving Tenco's stomach simultaneously falling to his groin and upwelling biliously up his throat. As the helicopter rapidly banked up and over town, Tenco leaned slightly to look out the door.

"Watch it," said one of his otherwise reticent guards absently over the pers-com, gripping Tenco's arm painfully.

Tenco saw the post office, the logo flag on the steel pole in front. The Main Street was lined with ‘shopping’ flags, each brightly colored and sporting a variety of seemingly benign corporate logos. Tenco allowed himself a sliver of self satisfaction- so far so good, next step- into the belly of the beast.

As they continued, darkside came into view: railroad tracks, car-littered yards, shacks. Plumes of sooty smoke rose from smoldering tenements. The ever present security drones circling lazilly overhead, UMV’s lurked on practically every intersection, even from this distance the barrels of their chem cannons, and the flat plates of pain radiators, were clearly and ominously visible.

Like water fleas, he could make out people shuffled about under UV blocking hats and flowing antirad ponchos. They all had a common demoninator- credit zero. They were the brown and the yellow and the white demonized on the nightly monitors. Parasites on society- takers, not givers. Credit less moochers. Tenco wondered to himself- are they really so dangerous? From his vantage they all seemed so helpless and pathetic. What propaganda could he, no should he, believe?

Tenco also made out the familiar rendering trucks making runs through the streets of Darkside, picking up corpses. Cadaverously turgid flesh flailed like grotesque sea anenomies from the open trailer tops as blood and gore oozed down the camouflaged sides, running over the grey words stenciled on the sides in military font: For God. For Security. For Homeland. Tenco's head suddenly filled with darkness like matt black cotton. He passed out. As Tenco slumped forward in his seat, the guards gave each other a knowing look- the sedatives had overcome the prisoner. Next stop- interrogation and, if Tenco was lucky, a thorough deprogramming; If he was unlucky- if anti government, or even worse, anticorporate information was extracted from him, then he would be terminated and recycled, like so many before him� and after.

Right now, secret factories are mass producing Cyborg Armies of insects with electronics embedded inside them. They've creating swarms of cyborg moths and flying beetles that can be controlled remotely. The U.S. military fields squadrons of these winged insect/machine hybrids with on-board audio, video or chemical sensors and biowarfare payloads. The cyborg insects conduct surveillance and reconnaissance missions on distant battlefields, in far-off caves, but also closer to home- in most major US cities, transmitting detailed data back to their handlers at U.S. intelligence and military bases.

The Pentagon aims to exponentially increase the paranoia of an already omnipresently surveilled society; any insect fluttering past your window may be a remote-controlled spy, packed with surveillance equipment. Even more frightening is that such creatures could be weaponized, that these cyborg insects might be armed with bioweapons.

For the past 50 years, work by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has led to some of the most spectacularly precision lethal weaponry in the U.S. arsenal: from Hellfire-missile-equipped Predator drones and stealth bombers to the Javelin portable "fire and forget" guided missiles. For decades now, DARPA has been funneling significant sums of money into a very different kind of guided missile project, its Hybrid Insect Micro-Mechanical Systems (HI-MEMS) program. This project has developed tightly coupled machine-insect interfaces by placing micro-mechanical systems inside the insects during the early stages of metamorphosis.- creating cyborg insects.

Technicians grow MEMS and electronics inside the insect pupae. The new tissue forms around the insertions, making the bio-electronic interface long-lasting and reliable." In other words, micro-electronics are inserted at the pupal stage of metamorphosis so that they can be integrated into the insects' bodies as they develop, creating living robots that can be remotely controlled after the insect emerges from its cocoon.

Through the implanted "multiple inserted neural and muscular stimulators, a visual stimulator, a nano assembly and a microcontroller" in a flying beetle, one can modulate the insect's flight starts, stops, throttle/lift, and turning. That is, you can literally drive an actual beetle. Using advanced simplex matrix computer algorithms, fluidic behavior patterns can be used to precisely direct large numbers of these cyborg bugs simultaneously in gigantic swarms of insects.

Sensors on the subjects ' hands, arms and legs track movement while mathematical models analyze the relationship between the subjects movement and activity in the brain's motor and sensory cortex. These signals are then passed on to a remote robotic battle system deployed in the field.

The original proof of concept model was bulky, not unlike a space suit worn by astronauts, and trailed a thick tangle of fiber optic cables which connected the kinetic suit to a supercomputing matrix. The ensemble he wore today in contrast felt more like the body armored business suit which had become the mainstay of his wardrobe since assuming the Presidency. Communication between the suit and the computer matrix was completely wireless, and the 360 degree virtual battle station monitors allowed submersion so effective, that even battle hardened veterans came out particularly hairy remote special ops reeking of BO and sweat and in need of intense formal psychological debriefing, despite never having been in any actual physical danger themselves.
There would be no real world remote ops today though, as the President selected “special ops simulation: Scenario Crimson”. Even though it was only a simulation, the familiar cold sweat was already forming a dark spade shaped shadow between his shoulder blades as the simulation loaded- when the monitors finally sprung to life he experienced the usual involuntary sphincter contraction. He found himself in the Situational awareness and command room aboard Air Force One, surrounded by his senior military and political staff, everyone’s eyes riveted to the main screen filled with a headshot of a masked woman who was speaking directly into the camera. Text scrolling along the lower half of the screen translated the woman’s words- but either the translation was garbled, or, more likely, the woman was on an incoherent anti-western screed.
The “Mystic Star” icon flashed in the status bar of his HUD, indicated the network was using a hardened backup military communications system. The president silently noted this and it’s meaning was ominously clear: primary communication systems were down, due to either power grid failure or high energy interference from nuclear fallout.

The voice of the SENTCOM operations command officer in Yucca mountain rasped in his headset: “We located the video’s transmission site in northern Pakistan and we’ve launched a submarine based tactical nuke tipped cruise missile to intercept.”

The woman on the screen fell silent for a moment, as if she had lost her train of thought, then stiffened, just before the screen went white with static. SENTCOM cut in again: “Target neutralized.” Hopefully that was the video transmissions’ origin and not just a relay station, the president thought detachedly.

The plane buffeting sharply, the screens flickered and several systems went into automatic reboot. “Another blast wave” intoned the pilot over the intercom, “looks like it was in the vicinity of Chicago, well behind us, thank god.”

“Do we know who’s hitting us yet?” the President asked coldly

“Best guess right now is either Russian or Pakistani based terrorists” said Condi in a haggard voice.

“Best Guess?!” He rumbled, “this’is no fucking time for guessing”

“Sir, I…”

“Never mind Condi,” he said more evenly, reaching out and grasping her shoulder. He could feel her trembling, and looking her in the eyes, saying softly “how long till we get to Yucca?”

The President didn’t wait for her reply, but instead invoked the “Pause” command.

The virtual world faded and he was left staring at the blackened monitors. He sat mulling the scenario. A full blown nuclear conflict with no certainty who started it and no clear idea who to retaliate against. He was jolted from his reverie by the clank of the Crisis phone, the flashing red gangling demanding his attention. Putting the receiver to his hear he could hear the voice of General Fallon “Sir, we must get you to a hardened bunker- there’s been reports of a large blast, likely nuclear, in the Los Angeles area.”

There are four things in the Football. The Black Book containing the retaliatory options, a book listing classified site locations, a description of procedures for the Emergency Broadcast System, and a three-by-five inch card with authentication codes. America Decides 2008!

With the united states of America 2008 election winnowing process well under way, the Puri Media Group present a straightforward analysis of the lead candidates.

As we approach the critical 2008 elections, the fundamental similarity between the anointed front runners Hillary Clinton and John McCain is revealed. Democrats, and America, cannot afford to screw up again. Bush’s blatant, and thus transparent, disregard for the rule of Congress (eg, the Rule of Law) and the people has revealed a common agenda. The World cannot afford a continuation of wanton unregulated slash and burn capitalism. We also cannot afford a continuation of the “Long War” on “Terror”- it’s bankrupting America much as the Cold War bankrupted the USSR and led to it’s collapse.

Democrats, Independents and Republicans need to rally for a new era in Washington politics before it’s too late. The divisive polarized politics of the past must be minimized, and Obama has the personality and Leadership to do that. Clinton and McCain represent the bitterly partisan politics of the late 1900s. Obama is a President who can lead America proudly into the 21st Century and start to repair the damage done by George W Bush and his ilk.

Obama is by no means perfect, but we don’t have the luxury of perfect, and Obama is the one candidate who admits that in politics as in life, “none of our hands are clean.” But we need to send a clear message: Unite for Change- let the power brokers that we, the people, still have a voice in our world politic.

Hackers briefly overwhelmed at least three of the 13 computers that help manage global computer traffic Yesterday in one of the most significant attacks against the Internet since 2002.

Vast amounts of data flooded the internet, but unlike previous one way denial of service attacks, last nights attacks involved the two way transfer of data from innumerable servers. In addition, anomalous fluxes in the overall data flow were observed- leaving world experts baffled and increasingly nervous as they ponder the potential origins and consequences of these anomalies.

Experts said the unusually powerful attacks lasted as long as 12 hours but passed largely unnoticed by most computer users. Computer scientists worldwide raced to cope with enormous volumes of data that threatened to saturate some of the Internet's most vital pipelines.

The Homeland Security Department confirmed it was monitoring what it called highly "anomalous" Internet traffic.

"There is no credible intelligence to suggest an imminent threat to the homeland or our computing systems at this time," said a visibly shaken HSD representative at today’s news conference.

The motive for the attacks was unclear, said Duane Wessels, a researcher at the Cooperative Association for Internet Data Analysis at the San Diego Supercomputing Center. "Maybe to show off or just be disruptive; it doesn't seem to be extortion or anything like that," Wessels added.

Experts said the hackers appeared to disguise their origin, but vast amounts of rogue data in the attacks were traced to South Korea, Iran, Ukraine, and other, unspecified, sources.

The attacks appeared to target Ultra DNS, the company that operates servers managing traffic for Web sites ending in the ORG and GOV suffixes, experts said. Officials with NeuStar Inc., which owns UltraDNS, confirmed only that it had observed an unusual increase in traffic.

Among the targeted "root" servers that manage global Internet traffic were ones operated by both the Defense Department and the Internet's primary public sector backbone.

"There was what appears to be some form of attack during the night hours here in California and into the morning," said Labia, chief technical officer for the Pluri Media Group. She said the attack was continuing and so was the hunt for the origin of the anomalies.

"I don't think anybody has the full picture," Labia said. "We're still analyzing the data."

Yesterday’ss attack was more serious than attacks against the same 13 root servers in October 2002 because black technology innovations in recent years have increasingly distributed their workloads to zombie computers located around the globe, making tracing efforts virtually impossible.

The Escape.

Citizens think my job is easy. Easy. Jacked into the Matrix- a highly paid operative, controlling myriad agents in various virtual realms. But lets get this straight right off- It’s not “games” where I make my mark and my money. This is no World of Warcraft gold mining operation. Not that kind of game. The virtual space my minions inhabit include global Stock Markets, financial networks, insurance and real estate grids, and of course the government- NSA and military net zone cracks being my personal specialty.

Needless to say I keep a low profile. Shit, I bearly even leave my lair except to score liquid sunshine and maybe rent some flesh. So, back to my point- people think my job is easy, but it ain’t. I was jacked into a protamod console in the last throws of cracking BankCorp’s main systems, and yep- nothing on but my boxers, and my katana. My VR set signaled a disturbance alarm, coloring the edges of my virtual workspace a deep throbbing crimson hew- triggered by the crunching sound of a swat team battering ram on the reinforced steel apartment door.

I backed out of the BankCorp network, leaving a digital bread crumb trial to ease my reentry when, or if, I returned. Just as I was pulling the fiber optic neural bridge from the base of my skull, the door finally crashed open, falling from twisted hinges, and 3 black masked shock troops rushed in, forming an arc in front of my seating figure, snub nosed machine pistols trained on my sternum. That was the first time I saw the RC. When he stomped through the door, the shock troops parted and fell back a few steps into the shadows. RC was like some modern day mash-up of half machine outlaw biker cowboy samurai. The most striking feature was what I had been told was a titanium skull helmet- imbedded into his skin, making his head look vaguely egg like. One of his eyes glowed green while the other was covered in some sort of communication monocle. The rest of his form was covered in what looked like armored black leather. I was pondering the function of one of the more sinister looking gadgets hanging from RC’s belt when he intoned with mechanical detachment “Jerom Zegal, you are here by charged under the general cyber criminal code and will be incarcerated until you are brought before the judicial for judegment”. At this point, your average cyber thug would be piss’n their pants at the thought of doing hard time in a meat cell. Me, I had no intention of being caged. My chair was a dead man’s switch- when I stood up, it would trigger a combination electromag pulse blast/flash bang. This combination first zapped all the electronics within 10 meters, then blinded all the IR and Viz sensors those mil types depended on for situational advantage. Not today. RC seemed to sense my calm, and cocked his head slightly. I think he presaged his demised a millisecond to late.

As I stood, RC actually started to back away a half-step. While his foot was still in the air the EMP/Flash combo went off. In a single blurred motion, I reached over my shoulder, gripped the handle of my nano carbide katana, and arced it forward and down between RC’s collar bone and neck. The subsequent spray of blood and gurgling exclamation confirmed his mortal wounds. Momentarily, his armor kept him stock upright, but as he drained, the body teetered, and then fell backwards as I was already rolling to the side wall so that by the time the shock troops opened fire, I was edging behind them in ghost mode, a shadow angling away towards the door and freedom.
